Holme Valley v Knights scr Bd3 (1)
HV Fire Station, 2004

1. c4 Nf6 2. Nc3 g6 3. e4

Heh Heh - King's Indian, having avoided Grunfield !! The main reason for playing English is transpositions {which are difficult)

3... d6 4. d4 Bg7 5. f3

Samisch variation

5... O-O 6. Be3

There are 10 recognised defences, which one will he chose ?

6... c6

Good move Black may play a6 and b5 Byrne-or an e5 hybrid.

7. Qd2

It's all book and I've used no time on the clock.

7... Re8

Avoids Bishop swap after Bh6, but loses time.

8. Bd3

I use the tempo to get the Bishop on the best square, usually it sits on f1 in the way.

8... Nbd7

Black could play e5 and still be in a main line.

9. Nge2

Samisch White setup - beautiful centre with nice piece co-ordination

9... a6

e5 is normal, but it has scored 90% for White !This is a good move as b5 expansion is threatened - Black can still play e5 later

10. a4

Prevents b5, but weakens b3,b4,c5. Now O-O-O looks dangerous for White, but he is getting a stranglehold on the pos.

10... b6

prevents a5. Black's counterplay must be to play e5 to remove the White d4 pawn and get a Knight on c5

11. Bh6

White starts the K-side attack. His problem is where to put his own King ?

11... Bh8

Of course, Black hangs onto his Bishop and defends the K-side

12. h4

White has blocked Black's h pawn first so that he cannot reply h5 to blockade the attack.Centre+both wings ! Petrosian style !

12... e5

Best reply. If White allows exd4 then the R on e8 and the B on h8 are in play+ Black has Bb7 and the d5 break

13. d5

No thanks to 13....exd4 !! White grabs space, and cramps Black's pieces.

13... cxd5 14. cxd5

Not the Knight - White must avoid exchanges to keep Black cramped.

14... Nc5

This is now Black's only good piece.

15. Bc2

A key move. The Bishop does a fantastic job here. It prevents Nb3 and covers a4,d3,e4

15... a5

Black prevents b4, kicking his Knight away, and will develop his Bishop on a6

16. h5

White dallies no more and goes ahead with the regulation pawn sack in this position The open h file is worth a pawn.

16... Nxh5 17. g4

White gains another tempo, White's Knight will go to g3 with threats of Qh2+ Bg5

17... Nf6 18. Ng3

Black is in serious trouble

Put White's Queen on h2 and Bg5 (or Be3 and g5) White is crashing through on the h file.

18... Bxg4

A desperate ploy - that does work in similar positions Black gets 3 pawns for the B, BUT White still has the attack.

19. fxg4 Nxg4 20. O-O-O

Excellent move-White Rook is coming to g1 and his Knight to f5. He does not fear Nxh6 21. Qxh6 and h7 goes.

20... Rc8

Trying to get counterplay on the c file

21. Rdg1

All White's pieces are combining, my computer classes this as lost for Black. White threatens Nf5+Rxg4

21... Qd7

It's difficult to find a move for Black. At least this has a Nxa4 "threat" because of the c file pin.

22. Kb1

Un-Geoff-like prophylaxis! But Black has nothing- I want to ensure the Bishop on c2 and Nc3 are unpinned for later !

22... f6

This is also the best move my computer can find, though it rates it lost for Black.

22... Nf6 23. Nf5 threat Bg5 e.g. 23... Rc7 24. Bg5 Rec8 25. Bxf6 Bxf6 26. Qh6 Nxa4 27. Qxh7+ Kf8 28. Qh8+ and mates. This was a recurring mate theme in my analysis.

Now White crashes through

23. Nf5

Threat Rxg4 forces Black's next

23... gxf5 24. exf5

White is crashing through on the g-file. The pawn regained is irrelevant.

24... e4

There's nothing better.

25. Rxg4+ Kf7

Now... how to continue ?

26. Be3

This is a killer - threat Rxh7ch, Also Bxc5 is on, and Qxf5 - the only reply -loses.

26... Qxf5

This loses but is the only way to defend h7.My computer gives it as best but assessment is +5.2 for White !!

27. Rgh4

Threatens Rxh7ch and also Bxc5 and Nxe4 (told yer I needed to unpin the KB+ N !)

27... Rg8

The e-pawn cannot be saved any way (Bxc5 etc.)

28. Bxc5

This allows the crushing Nxe4 next move.

28... Rxc5

28... bxc5 is better, though Black has no counterplay whatsoever. 29. Rxh7+ Bg7 30. Nxe4 Whith awful threats. 30... Qe5 31. R1h5 Qe7 32. Nxf6 Qxf6 33. Rf5 Qxf5 34. Bxf5 Rce8 35. Qg5 Re1+ 36. Ka2 is mate in 8 according to my computer !!

29. Nxe4

Threat Nxd6ch, and also Nxc5

29... Qxd5

Only move but I've seen all this and Black's a gonner.

30. Qxd5+ Rxd5 31. Bb3

Ouch !

31... Ke6 32. Nc3

The Knight and Bishop combine yet again - just as they had done earlier in the game ! It's poetry man !

32... Ke5

Resign was a good alternative.

33. Bxd5

By now Black's time has almost gone. Well he's a Rook and a Knight down.

33... f5 34. Bxg8

Okay that's enuff !
