Roger Tuddenham - Eddie Mellor [D00]

Inividual KO 2005-6/Chartist (1) 2005

[Centre Counter / SCANDINAVIAN defence.,B01]

1. e4 d5 2. d4?!

White refuses the Centre Counter / Scandinavian and offers a Blackmar Diemer Gambit - Will Black accept?

2... dxe4 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. f3 e6

Black chickens out - the move looks timid - but it does have its points.

5. fxe4

I actually played Bg5 in this position.

5... Bb4

The point. Black threatens Nxe4

6. Bd3

The problem with this move is that it does not defend the pawn

Black has Nxe4 !

7. Nf3

Now White must be better.

7... O-O?

This natural looking move puts Black in real trouble as White is about to set himself up for the"Greek gift "sacrifice. h6 is probably best.

8. e5! Nd5

Yup we are all set up for the "Greek Gift" !

9. Bxh7+! Kxh7?

This loses quickly. Black had to play Kh8.

11. h4!

Black is lost

11... Nxd4

Desperation.

11... Nxe5 had to be tried to attempt to give the King a square on f6 , but... 12. dxe5 Nxc3 13. h5+ Kh6 14. Nxf7+ Kh7 15. Qxd8 Rxd8 16. Nxd8 Ne4+ 17. c3 with a winning advantage.

12. h5+ Kf5

12... Kh6 White picks up the Black Queen with Nxe6 discovered check or simply Qxd4 ! and Black will have to play Qxg5 to avoid mate. 13. Qxd4 Qe7 (13... Nxc3 14. Nxf7+ Kh7 15. Nxd8) 14. Qe4 f5 15. exf6 Bxc3+ 16. bxc3 gxf6 17. Qg6#

Simplest as Black cannot avoid mate. It's mate in 5 in the longest line.

13... Nxc3

Black chooses a quick death.
