M. Parsons - P. Shaw
Individual KO 2006/7, 12/30/2006

[Dr Peter Shaw]

1.e4 e6 2.d4 b6 3.Bd3 Bb7 4.Nf3 c5 5.c3 Nf6 6.Qe2 Be7 7.O-O Nc6 8.Bg5

This allows black to get the bishop pair (a3 is the main line.)
8...cxd4 9.cxd4 Nb4 10.Bxf6 Bxf6 11.e5 And this gives me the other bishop!
11...Nxd3 12.Qxd3 Be7 13.Nbd2

?! (13.Nc3 looks more natural, and I don't think I would have played ...d6 as it looks much more risky.)
13...d6 14.Ne4 dxe5 15.Qb5+ Qd7 16.Qxd7+ ?!
[16.Qxe5 O-O is bad for White, but keeping the queens on gives more chances.]
16...Kxd7 17.Nxe5+ Ke8 18.Nd2 ?! (18.Nc3 again!)
18...f6 19.Nef3 Kf7 20.Rac1 Rac8 21.a3 Rhd8 (21 ...g5 first perhaps?)
22.h4 h6 23.Rfd1 (23.h5 would force me to find another plan, although the pawn could end up being weak.)
23...g5 24.hxg5 hxg5 25.Rxc8 Rxc8 26.Ne1 I seem to be making progress, but I lose control in the next five moves.
26...Bd6 (26 ...g4 is possible.)
27.f3 (27.g3 was the move I expected.)
27...f5

?! Allows the knight into e5. but on the other hand I don't want to allow Ne4. Maybe my previous move was wrong.
28.Nd3 Rc2 29.Ne5+ Kf6 30.Ndc4 I'd overlooked this when I played ...Rc2. This position is getting complicated.
30...Bc7 31.b3 ? Weakening c3.
[31.Ne3 Rxb2 32.Rc1 and Black has to play the ugly Bd8 since BxE5 doesn't look winning to me.]
31...b5 32.Nd7+ Ke7 33.Nce5

? A blunder, but other moves are losing material anyway.
33...Bd5 ?? This almost lets my opponent back in the game. I was trying (and failing) to make...Bd6 and Rc7 work and missed the obvious. ( Bc8 wins a piece immediately! )
34.Rd3 a5 35.a4 ?
[35.b4 axb4 36.axb4 and Black still has work to do.]
35...b4 Now it's very easy.
36.g3 Rc3 37.Rxc3 bxc3 38.Nc5 c2 39.Ned3 Bxg3 40.b4 axb4 41.a5 b3 42.Na4 Bf4 43.a6 Bc4 44.a7 Bxd3 45.a8=B c1=Q+ 46.Kg2 Qf1#
