Peake G M - Senior Paddy
HV v Chartist (White Hart), 2008

[A86]

1.c4 f5 2.d4 Nf6 3.Nc3 g6 This fianchetto, which signifies the Leningrad Dutch, is the best of the various Dutch defences.
4.g3 Bg7 5.Bg2 O-O 6.Nh3

Better than Nf3. White has the option of Nf4 or Ng5, and the King Bishop is not restricted.
6...d6 7.d5 The obvious positional move that is not understood by amateurs. Compare this with the same position with Nf3. With Nh3 this position has scored 60% on my database in 743 games. With Nf3 White has only scored 51% for White in 262 games.
7...e5 ? a dubious move. I was surprised by this as 7...c6 or 7...Na6 are recognised as the main lines.
8.dxe6 Na6 !? Played once before by Dukaczewski Piotr (POL) 2366. It seemed dubious to me.
[8...c6 appears best, but...
9.Ng5 threatening Nf7, followed by capture of the d6 pawn.]
9.Nd5

!? Now Black loses material if he plays Bxe6, because of Nxf6+ and Bxb7. Also White is threatening e7 fork.
[9.Ng5 Nc5 didn't seem to get the job done.]
9...Re8 10.Ng5 Threatening to mop up the Queen with Nf7 - a recurring theme in this game.
[10.e7 ! I looked at this for a long time
10...Qd7 11.Bh6 ! c6 12.Ng5

! was the double piece sacrifice that I did not see. Neither piece can be touched.
12...Nc7
(12...cxd5 13.Bxd5+ Kh8 14.Nf7+ Kg8 15.Ne5+ wins)
13.Bxg7 Nfxd5 14.Bd4 Nxe7 15.O-O White has a big advantage.]
10...c6 the only move that makes any sense.
11.e7
[11.Nf7 Qa5+ 12.Bd2 Qc5 13.Nf4 Bxe6 didn't seem fantastic for White.]
11...Qa5+
[11...Qd7

I thought was weak as Black cannot take the Knight. e.g.
12.O-O cxd5 13.Bxd5+ Kh8 14.Nf7+ Kg8 15.Ne5+ wins, but Black has 12...h6 instead so it may be the best move.]
12.Bd2 Qc5 Obviously forced. It's amazing how few squares the Queen has.
13.Be3 Qxc4

? Brave, but probably losing.
[13...Qa5+ was the move I expected,
14.Nc3 White retains some advantage.]
14.b3 ! Qb5 15.a4 ! Qa5+ 16.Bd2 Qc5 17.b4
[17.Rc1 ! was logical and best, but Geoff is on a single-minded Queen hunt.
17...Qa3
(17...Qd4 18.Rc4 Qe5 19.Bc3 wins)
18.Bc3+ / -]
17...Qd4 18.e3 Qg4

Okay - after much huffing and puffing, squirming, head scratching and time on the clock I've forced the position that I foresaw. Now I can win the Queen.
[18...Qd3 seriously considered by Paddy - a good job he didn't play it because Nf4 eats the Queen
19.Nf4]
19.Bf3 ? Oh Woe is me, I go ahead and "win" the Queen - but at too high a cost, and slip into an inferior position.
[19.Qb3

Of course Alekhine would have played this move instantly! If I'd had the luxury of being able to stop and consider this move [17 moves left in 12 minutes] I would have realised that it wins immediately !
19...cxd5 Other moves are worse !
(19...Kh8 20.Nf7+ Kg8 21.Nh6+)
(19...Qxg5 20.Nxf6+ Kh8 21.Nxe8 Qxe7 (21...Bxa1 22.Bc3+) 22.Nxg7 Kxg7 23.Bc3+ wins)
20.Bxd5+ Kh8 21.Nf7+ Kg8 22.Nxd6+ Kh8 23.Nf7+ Kg8 24.Ne5+ wins]
19...Qxg5 20.e4 Qxd2+ ! 21.Qxd2 cxd5 with advantage to Black. The game was eventually agreed drawn in the quickplay finish on Black's proposal, despite Black having a large advantage, - the match was already won for Chartist.
